Happy 76 Birthday, Placido Domingo!

January 21,  is the 76 Birthday of one of the greatest tenor of the lat XX century…. a true treasure of history Opera, his name is along with the names of Enrico Caruso and Maria Callas as a true icon of the history of the greatest art form of all, the Opera. His name is famous and very well known all over the world… it is impossible that no person on earth wouldn’t know the glorious name of Plácido Domingo. Tenor, and conductor, Plácido Domingo has the greatest career in Opera history and with the record of more roles in the operatic repertoire and with a brilliant career of 50 years, Placido Domingo always brings a smile on my face. I have many beautiful memories of Placido Domingo from my childhood/teenage years, along with Luciano Pavarotti, Placido gave me so much joy in my childhood years with his beautiful concerts. Placido Domingo always brings a smile to my heart. It is impossible not to smile when we think of Placido Domingo. And by the way, Placido has one of the most beautiful smiles ever. Of course, I can not also forget, the beautiful humanitarian work that Placido did in Mexico, after the horrible and powerful Earthquake that destroyed Mexico City in 1985. Placido’s humanitarian work for Mexico after those horrible moments will never forget his kind, generous heart and we consider him part of Mexico. And yes, Placido was born in Spain but raised in Mexico since age eight, he actually started his Opera career with the Mexican National Opera. Placido began singing in Mexico, first singing in Spanish Zarzuelas. And later, Placido made his mayor Operatic debut as Alfredo, in Verdi’s La Traviata in the Teatro María Teresa Montoya in the Mexican city of Monterrey. And after that debut, the beginning of Placido’s international career started in many countries like Israel, Italy, Austria and USA. The story of Placido with the Met began in September 28 of 1968, when he had to replace Franco Corelli for “Adriana Lecouvreur” and it was the birth of a new legend. Of course, many different Tenors in different ways made history, Caruso, Vinay, del Monaco, Tucker, Corelli, Bergonzi, Gedda, di Stefano, McCracken, Vickers, Pavarotti…. but history has a very special place for Placido Domingo. Placido Domingo is an icon. And something that I love about Placido is that he loves what he does.. he has PASSION for Opera and he has done so much for the operatic world, supporting new Opera singers, working as director for the L.A. Opera, working also as a conductor, because yes, Placido loves Opera and music so much! And also, Placido changed the way of acting and performing in Opera. Many of Placido’s performances are acting of first class and many of his acting performances are worth of an Academy Award. That is also another reason why Placido changed the world of Opera. With one of the most impressive operatic careers, with more of 147 roles in his Operatic repertoire, his repertoire marks from Zandonai, Handel, Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Donizetti, Bizet, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, Wagner… just to name a few. Placido has sung and performed in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Russian. Otello (in which he is considered one of the greatest in this demaning role), Don José, Canio, Turiddu , Samson, Caravadossi, Manrico, Calaf, Rodolfo in La Boheme, Rodolfo in Luisa Miller, Hoffmann (another key role for Placido) Werther, Faust, Ismaele, Enée, Siegmund (Placido is also considered as one of the best Siegmunds in Die Walküre), Lohengrin, Parsifal, Almaviva, King Riccardo/Gustavo, Cyrano de Bergerac, Don Rodrigue, Nemorino , Andrea Chenier, Radames, Des Grieux, Don Alvaro, The Duke, Don Carlo, Lensky, Macduff, Walther von Stolzing, Loris, Hermann, Florestan, Idomeneo, Ernani, Enzo, Tan, the first Emperor, Pablo Neruda and now Simon Boccanegra and Nabucco and so many, many, many more roles to name! It would take me a long post to name all the wonderful roles of Placido Domingo! Placido Domingo has done so much for the Opera and for us….. I think that we all are so fortunate and so lucky to live in the era of Placido Domingo because not every day we can witness a jewel, a special human being, like Placido, because yes, he is special, who can still sing at age 76 and not only that but also conducting! Thank you, Placido Domingo, for being who you are, for your love for Opera, and thank you, Placido Domingo, the human being, for the many wonderful humanitarian things that you have done for humanity, For supporting music and arts and also for helping other human beings, yes, you are special Placido Domingo. FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS, HAPPY 76 BIRTHDAY PLACIDO DOMINGO!!!!!
