A huge loss for the world of music and Opera… one of my favorite conductors, the great Georges Prêtre, passed away today at age 92. One thing that I always admired about Georges Prêtre, is that I always felt his love for music while conducting…. and he still conducted at age 91 recently!!!! (even though that Georges Prêtre himself once said that he wanted to be a composer, not a conductor)
But, everytime I watched Georges Prêtre conducting, I always noticed his huge joy and love for music. no matter if it was Debussy, Ravel, Richard Strauss, Bizet, Offenbach or the Strauss Dinasty.
One of my favorite opera productions is the 70’s/80s production of “Les Contes D’Hoffmann” at the ROH with Placido Domingo and with Maestro Georges Prêtre conducting.
Another unforgettable moment was watching Maestro Prêtre conducting both the New Year’s concerts in Vienna and also the New Year’s concert in La Fenice in Venice.
We lost Maestro Claudio Abbado, we lost Lorin Maazel, we lost Maestro Kurt Masur and now… dear Maestro Georges Prêtre.
Rest in peace, dear Maestro Georges Prêtre. We will never forget you And thank you for the many joys that you gave us with your beautiful conducting
