Happy 80th Birthday, Dame Janet Baker!

Today, August 21th, is the 80th Birthday of Dame Janet Baker, the extraordinary English Mezzo-soprano.

She is one of the greatest opera singers of Great Britain and the world.

She has a brilliant opera career and she is admired and respected for being a great, excellent artist.

One of her most memorable roles is “Dido” from Belioz’s “Les Troyens” and I also admire her performance of Mahler’s “Kindertotenlieder”.

Janet Baker was born in Hatfield, South Yorkshire, England.

She made her opera debut in 1956 at the Oxford University Opera Club in Smetana’s The Secret. And also in 1956, she  made her debut at Glyndebourne.

She had many great roles with the English Opera Group at  Aldeburgh and also with the Scottish Opera, Dame Janet Baker gave many wonderful performances.

In 1966, Dame Janet Baker made her debut as Hermia in Britten’s Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Opera and Oratorio are part of her brilliant career.  Britten, Handel, Mahler, Berlioz, Elgar, Purcell, Gluck, Mozart, Massenet, Richard Strauss, Bach, Donizetti and Monteverdi are just some of the many great composers that are now part of Dame Janet Baker’s repertoire.

Dame Janet Baker had a wonderful friendship with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
